How to choose the best according to sugar content?

Today we will look at the cork of Moravian wineries and divide them by regions. Each region gives the wine a different character, style, and taste. Then we will touch on the classification of wine by sugar content, because it helps you better understand its quality, and of course, we'll throw in a few discounts.

So get your glasses ready, it's time to taste!

According to 4 basic subregions

Ah, southern Moravia, it's beautiful there! Good weather combined with ideal soil gives the local wines a distinctive and unmistakable character. Wonderful white wines are born here – with interesting aromas, spiciness, and fresh acidity. Red wines are not grown as much here, but they are still worth mentioning. By the way, Moravian vineyards make up 96% of all vineyards in our country and are divided into 4 sub-regions. Here they are!

This is one of the four main Moravian subregions with the warmest and sunniest climate. It is particularly suitable for red wines, which are characterized by limestone soil with a high magnesium content, but the white aromatic varieties such as Tramín červený, Pálava, Muškát moravský, Müller Thurgau, and others are also noteworthy.

Mikulovsko is also a land blessed with wine, mainly producing excellent white wines – Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, and Sauvignon, which are varieties that thrive in the local limestone soils, clays, and sands. Red wines are represented by varieties such as Saint Laurent, Blaufränkisch, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Its interesting feature is the great diversity of wines, which we owe to the various types of soil and microclimate. You will find excellent Riesling, Müller Thurgau, or Pinot Gris and red Blaufränkisch or Zweigelt.

The climatic conditions and rocky subsoil in Znojemsko are perfect for full aromatic white wines, such as Veltliner Green, Müller Thurgau, Sauvignon, Rhine Riesling, and Pálava. From the reds, try Frankovka, it's worth mentioning!

Or How to Recognize Quality Wine

Last time, we touched on the classification of wine according to residual sugar, from dry to sweet. Residual sugar is the sugar that remains in the wine after fermentation. However, wines can also be classified according to sugar content, meaning the sugar present in the grapes before fermentation.

&nbsp;

Sugar content is indicated by the unit ⁰NM, which means 1 kg of natural sugar in 100 l of grape must, and in the Czech Republic, it serves as a quality guide. The lower the sugar content, the lower the quality of the wine, and vice versa. Higher sugar content also means a higher league. How to navigate this classification?

According to the wine law, this is the highest category of wines in our country. For a wine to have a designation, it must meet three criteria. These include a specific sugar content, absence of additional additives during production, and use of a maximum of three grape varieties. These are quite high demands, which is why only 10% of wines in our country have a designation. Give them a try!

<h2>Kabinetní</h2>

Light wine, pleasantly drinkable and dry. The sugar content of the grapes is 19 °NM.

Our tip: Ryzlink vlašský with a delicate floral aroma and flavors of peaches and citrus. Ideal with fish and other light dishes.

<h2>Late Harvest</h2>

Dry or semi-dry wine harvested at a later date, when the sugar content reaches 21–24 °NM.

Our tip: Ryzlink vlašský, which smells and tastes of citrus with herbs and offers a pronounced mineral finish. It is also suitable for aging.

<h2>Selection of Grapes</h2>

Full attribute wine with higher alcohol content and higher residual sugar content, with grape ripeness at 24–27 °NM.

Our tip: Opulent wine, which has a hint of chocolate, dried fruit, and spices in its taste. It pairs excellently with duck, beef ribs, or veal cheeks.

<h2>Selection of Berries</h2>

Made from selected grapes that have ripened for a very long time and have a sugar content of 27 °NM. They are very full, semi-sweet to sweet.

Our tip: Chardonnay full of meadow and honey flavors. Ideal with seafood, darker fish, and chicken.

<h2>Selection of Cibéb</h2>

A rare and more expensive wine with a sweet taste, because the grapes ripen to at least 32 °NM due to the extremely long ripening period in the vineyard. They ripen so long that they become raisins – cibéby.

Our tip: Riesling with the aroma of honeycombs and ripe white fruit, harmonious in taste, sweet and with a subtle acidity.

<h2>Ice Wine</h2>

Wine with a full flavor, sweet and more expensive, made by pressing frozen grapes harvested at a temperature of at least –7 °C and a sugar content of 27 °NM.

Our tip: Welschriesling with a honey aftertaste and aroma of raisins and figs.

<h2>Straw Wine</h2>

Sweet, more expensive wine with a sugar content of at least 27 °NM. It is made from grapes dried for at least three months after harvest on straw or reeds.&nbsp;

Our tip: Pálava with a full flavor and caramel tones.
